Why do you need Secure data Destruction?
Across Europe in 2024, there were approximately 6,857 publicly disclosed security incidents, a significant increase from 1,243 in 2021. This surge is largely attributed to a rise in sophisticated cyberattacks, including large-scale ransomware operations, supply chain breaches, and AI-driven phishing campaigns.
The likelihood of a data breach is now higher than ever as cyber threats evolve, and many companies are struggling to keep pace with the latest security defences. The cost of responding to breaches has also increased, especially for businesses with a high percentage of remote workers. According to the Ponemon Institute, organisations that support remote work spend an additional $1.1 million on data breach responses, up from previous years.
With over 50% of employees now working remotely compared to 30% pre-pandemic, the financial burden of mitigating cyber threats has grown substantially. This reinforces the need for businesses to strengthen their cybersecurity strategies, invest in robust incident response plans, and ensure continuous monitoring to mitigate risks effectively.
Why Secure Media Destruction Matters
Properly disposing of obsolete media formats is critical for protecting sensitive information and ensuring compliance with data security regulations. Below are reasons why secure media destruction is essential for your business!
1. Prevents Data Breaches & Identity Theft
Simply erasing or reformatting a hard drive or tape does not completely remove stored data. Cybercriminals can recover information from improperly discarded media, leading to security breaches. Secure destruction ensures that all digital content is permanently eliminated, protecting both your business and clients from identity theft and data leaks.
2. Maintains Compliance with Data Protection Laws
With the increasing scrutiny of data privacy laws such as GDPR, ISO 27001, and other industry-specific regulations, businesses must ensure that obsolete media is destroyed securely. Failure to properly dispose of sensitive data could lead to legal consequences and hefty fines.
3. Reduces Storage Clutter & Improves Efficiency
Outdated magnetic media, hard drives, and backup tapes take up valuable space in storage rooms and data centers. Secure destruction helps free up space for essential business operations, reducing the costs and risks associated with storing obsolete or unneeded media.
4. More Secure & Cost-Effective Than DIY Methods
Destroying media in-house using basic degaussing or shredding equipment may not meet industry security standards and can leave residual data intact. Additionally, relying on untrained employees for destruction increases the risk of errors and data breaches. Using a professional media destruction service ensures 100% data erasure and provides a certificate of destruction as proof of compliance.
5. Environmentally Responsible Disposal
Instead of allowing old media to end up in landfills or oceans, professional destruction services focus on secure recycling and responsible disposal. Materials such as plastics and metals from tapes and drives can often be repurposed, reducing environmental impact.
Choose Secure Media Destruction for Peace of Mind
Don’t leave your sensitive information at risk. By partnering with a trusted media destruction provider, you ensure the complete and irreversible destruction of confidential data, safeguarding your business, customers, and reputation.
What is a Certificate of Destruction?
A Certificate of Destruction is an official document that confirms your confidential media has been securely and permanently destroyed. It details the destruction process, the method used, and, in the case of certified hard drive destruction, provides a record of the devices that contained sensitive data.
There are three key reasons why a Certificate of Destruction is important:
- Compliance with Data Protection Laws
Regulations such as GDPR and ISO 27001 require businesses to securely dispose of sensitive data. A destruction certificate ensures that the correct process has been followed, reducing the risk of non-compliance and potential fines. - Security & Peace of Mind
Simply deleting files or wiping a hard drive is not enough to prevent data recovery. With a verified destruction process, you can be confident that your data is permanently erased, minimising the risk of a security breach. - Business Reputation & Accountability
Handling confidential data responsibly protects your company’s reputation. If ever questioned about your data disposal process, a destruction certificate acts as proof that you’ve followed best practices and safeguarded client information.

What services does HJM SD offer?
We specialise in:
Hard Drive & Media Destruction – Securely shredding HDDs, SSDs, USBs, and more
Tape Destruction – Safe disposal of outdated formats like LTO, DLT & DAT
End-of-Life (EOL) Product Destruction – For obsolete branded or sensitive products
Disc Recycling – Secure disposal of CDs, DVDs, Blu-rays, and other optical media
How do I know my confidential information is completely destroyed?
After every shredding service, you’ll receive a Certificate of Destruction, confirming the exact date and method of destruction. Plus, if required, we can video the process for extra reassurance.
How should I dispose of my old hard drives?
Wiping, reformatting, or even hitting a hard drive with a hammer won’t keep your data safe. We offer two secure destruction methods:
Hard Drive Punching – Punctures a hole straight through the platters, rendering them unreadable
Hard Drive Shredding – Slices hard drives into tiny, irrecoverable fragments
Why should I securely destroy a hard drive?
Even after wiping or degaussing, data can still be recovered if the drive remains intact. Our industrial-grade destruction ensures your information cannot be retrieved, keeping your business safe.
Can hard drives be recycled?
Yes, but simply recycling them doesn’t guarantee data security. We apply the same strict destruction protocols to hard drives as we do for other sensitive media, ensuring your data is completely destroyed before recycling.
When will I receive my Certificate of Destruction?
As soon as your media has been securely destroyed, your Certificate of Destruction will be emailed to you for your records.
